Sara's Story
It Hurts So Much to Lose Your Mother
When Sara first came to Covenant House out of sheer desperation…
In her words—I had nothing. I was empty inside. I was left alone a long time ago. It didn’t matter if the sun came up or not.
No one could bring back Sara’s mother. But we could certainly give her lots of motherly love.
When I first walked through the doors at Covenant House, I was greeted by something safe and secure.
We believe that Covenant House works because it provides a family atmosphere. It’s the kind of environment that so many of the kids who come here have never known.
If we can spend one day with a child who feels lost…
If we can show that youngster that somebody cares…
If we can hug them and offer them a place of safety…
…then we’ve taken the first step.
Yes, these kids are tough and knowing. Most have nothing when they come here. But of we tried to fool them. they know we were “conning” them. Each individual child needs to know that someone – we – sincerely cares about them.
At Covenant House, we offer kids a chance to look at what their future might be from a different point of view.
If they follow the path we describe, then we can do so much for them.
Sara was one of those who got the message. She is turning into a wonderful young lady, full of drive and fortified with a vision of where she’s going.
Today, I’m working on my GED diploma. I have a job I love. Living isn’t only about the next hit. It’s about me. I know that the road to sobriety is hard, but it’s a journey I’m ready to take.
Don’t you love hearing that? Even an hour’s talk with Sara is so uplifting, so rewarding. We were so impressed by Sara that we wanted you to know her story, so you could feel as good as we did.
Hers is a story of triumph over adversity, a story of strong character overcoming terrible experiences.
And if you had met her with me, you’d be sure to know how important and valuable your gifts to Covenant House are.
Your gifts are precious because they help us rescue so many precious lives, lives – like Sara’s -- that have already suffered serious harm and that might be lost without Covenant House.
As Sara says, "Covenant House helped me. There is not a word cool enough to describe how they make you feel."
At Covenant House there will always be something healthy to eat, a hot shower, clean clothes, a warm bed and a sympathetic ear.
And we will never ever turn a child away. We intend to live up to that promise.
We will always find a way to fit one more in, no matter how crowded we get.
But sad to say, today we’re seeing more and more kids at our door, despite the troubles they’ve had, these are good kids!
